Powers and Exponents

Introduction Notes

Prior to discussing how to simplify expressions with multiplication and division, I like to spend at least a day talking about powers and exponents. Students complete a quick set of digital notes where they learn the basics of an exponent (base, exponent, etc.). Next, they practice converting an expression between various forms (standard, exponential and expanded). These notes are available in my TpT store. Click the picture to access.

Once we are finished with the notes, students work on a ‘Mystery Food Thief’ activity on powers and exponents. During this activity, students will solve various problems to help solve a terrible crime (someone stole FOOD from somewhere in the school building, oh my!).
